Graduate Student Housing and Local Transportation

Housing

Although Cal Poly does not have housing specifically for graduate students or married students, the Cal Poly Housing and Residential Life Office provides a link to an "off-campus" search engine for housing. Also take a look at the "faculty/staff housing" link that in turn links to several other data bases containing local listings.

If you plan to arrive during summer, you may be able to live temporarily on campus in an undergraduate student apartment. This option is available to single persons only.

Transportation

In selecting your housing location, you should consider that Cal Poly students and staff can ride SLO Transit buses for free, by showing a Cal Poly id card. In additional, countywide RTA bus rides are subsidized by the university by nearly 60% off regular fares. General on-campus parking permits for students presently cost $5 per day or $270 for the full academic year. Reflecting the area's gentle climate, Cal Poly has convenient and extensive bicycle parking and the City of San Luis Obispo maintains a well-developed bike lane network.

San Luis Obispo is served by regional commercial airlines through San Luis Obispo County Airport. San Luis Obispo and the Cal Poly campus have Amtrak service via the Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner routes, as well as Greyhound bus service.

“One thing I love about Cal Poly is that it offers so many opportunities for students of all majors to get involved in something they enjoy.

The university has student-run TV and radio stations, sports clubs, a beautiful recreational center, and one of the best student-led community service programs. Participating in Student Community Services gave me the chance to help the homeless, senior citizens, and children. I also learned valuable leadership skills that will benefit me for the rest of my life.
