Applying to Graduate Study

Because Cal Poly has several different types of engineering graduate programs, admission procedures vary, depending on whether one is seeking a standalone post-baccalaureate MS degree, a blended BS+MS program, or a joint interdisciplinary program. This page provides advice related to the following aspects of admission:

» Application to Post-Baccalaureate Programs

covers the procedures and requirements for admission into one of the standalone MS programs, for individuals who will have already completed the BS degree.

» An applicant to one of the two interdisciplinary joint degree program within the College should follow the standard post-baccalaureate application process by applying to ONE of the two parent programs, and specifying on the admissions application that the joint degree program is desired. Contact the appropriate Graduate Coordinator for further information.

» Application to Blended BS+MS Programs

describes how a person currently pursuing a Cal Poly engineering BS degree should go about entering a blended BS+MS program, which leads to conferral of both degrees at the same time.

» Classified and Conditional Admission

describes "conditional" admission, which can sometimes be used to gain admission to graduate study when normal requirements are not entirely met.

» Managing Your Application Process

presents some helpful advice to ensure that your application is managed successfully.

“Cal Poly has changed me and made me a better person.

For my senior project I was the project manager for an RFID system. It was a little overwhelming, but I got a lot out of it. Plus, I have a wonderful department. My favorite part of IME is the people.
