  • U.S.News & World Report named the College of Engineering the nation's top public, non-doctoral engineering school in its 2008 Best Colleges rankings.

  • Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering: Top public program in the U.S.

Program Developments

  • Project Based Learning Institute, which facilitates industry sponsored projects, welcomed new corporate members, including Northrop Grumman, Edwards Air Force Base, and others.
  • Cal Poly joined Seoul National University of Technology and six other universities from around the world in addressing the future of engineering education.

Student Achievements

  • The CubeSat program launched two picosatellites into space.
  • For the fifth straight year, Cal Poly's Society of Women Engineers (SWE) was named the nation's best "large" student section.
  • The Cal Poly Supermileage Team won the U.S. Shell Eco-Car Challenge by achieving 1,902 miles per gallon.
  • The Cal Poly Concrete Canoe team placed fifth in the nation.
  • A multidisciplinary student design team represented North America at the International Collegiate Student Safety Technology Design Competition in France.
  • The Cal Poly Robotics Club won the RoboMagellan Competition at the International RoboGames.
  • Engineers Without Borders undertook projects on two continents.
  • The Cal Poly Human Powered Vehicle Club (HPV) took 2nd place at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) HPV Competition

Faculty Achievements

  • Dr. Diana Franklin (computer science) received a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation's Early Career Development (CAREER) Program.
  • Dr. Lynne Slivovsky (electrical engineering was named a Faculty Fellow in the Service Learning for Political Engagement Program.
  • Dr. Trevor Harding (materials engineering) and colleagues from other institutions received an $850,000 National Science Foundation grant.
  • Dr. Jianbiao Pan (industrial engineering) and Drs. Albert Liddicoat and James Harris (electrical engineering) were awarded a $199,030 National Science Foundation grant.
  • Dr. Mei-Ling Lui (computer science) and Dr. Jose Macedo (industrial & manufacturing engineering ) were named Fulbright Scholars.

Alumni Success

  • Rick Sturckow (ME '84) commanded Space Shuttle Atlantis on a mission to the International Space Station.
  • Burt Rutan (AERO '65), and British entrepreneur Richard Branson announced plans to carry "tourists" to space on Virgin Galactic.

“I love physical activity and working with my hands.

My first quarter, I built an air motor and took welding, so the physical, hands-on work I was seeking came quickly.
